10/13/2002: thoughts on Cui Bono

Spoilers for Andromeda 3x04 Cui Bono ahead...

I liked the continuity of Sid (Beka's uncle from "The Pearls that Were His Eyes") competing for the highest office in the New Commonwealth, and how he put his spin on his past. I also enjoyed that their relationship is complex and that there are no easy fixes, also that Sid isn't simply a "bad guy" despite his questionable actions.

The conflict between the New Commonwealth and Dylan's idea of the Old Commonwealth Resurrected is becoming a constant. I wonder if the past was really better though, or whether Dylan just has more information and insight in its workings now than he had previously. It becomes ever more obvious that he misses the freedom of being able just to do as he pleases. I also liked how Rommie balances his views, it seems she is more comfortable the new structures being implemented.

Overall I liked the plot, and they didn't do any glaringly stupid things (like, say, giving deranged mental patients unsupervised access to sensitive areas of the ship, see "Mad To Be Saved"). Though Sid must have a lot of faith in Beka to arrive and in the medical facilities, if he risks to shoot himself in the head, even if it is a calculated shot. But then he most likely got that far in the cut-throat environment because he's good at assessing acceptable risks.

Tyr and Beka are spending a lot of time together it seems, I wonder whether that has anything to do with both of them having shared the experience inside the tunnel in "If the Wheel is Fixed", whatever that experience was. Also Tyr is painting? That surprised me, but I guess even Nietzscheans have hobbies.

I missed Harper in the episode, he almost played no role, however the scene when Dylan tapped his dataport stood out to me. In "Be All My Sins Remembered" it was stated that Harper doesn't like his dataport being touched, just like Bobby didn't like it. I think it even was Dylan who said that. And still now Dylan taps it very casually.
