10/18/2003: Jeremiah: Letters From the Other Side

Now that I've seen the second part of the season opener, here are my thoughts...

I think the two parter did a good job to wrap up the arc of the first season with Jeremiah looking for his father and the (initially) mysterious Valhalla sector. Now that it isn't a threat anymore the focus can shift to the rebuilding, though I don't think that this were really the last problems from the past that we'll see cropping up, even though it seems that "The Big Death" got all those inside and Meaghan committed suicide. There is at least still Jeremiah's father, the assistant, their knowledge and Meaghan's blood sample. But I like that the focus of the series evolves and will probably shift even more towards rebuilding something new. It'll also be interesting to see how Jeremiah will develop now that he has achieved what has been his single and defining focus for the last fifteen years.

I liked that there was no quick resolution to the strain Elizabeth's death put on Kurdy's and Jeremiah's friendship, though I hope of course that their friendship will turn out to be stronger and they'll work through this (which I think is likely to happen).

So far Mr. Smith and his messages from god seem to be just a very literal implementation of the "Deus-Ex-Machina" plot device, and I'm not sure I'd like something like that in the long run. However as of now I still trust JMS that this will be going somewhere beyond a convenient divine intervention, and I actually like Mr. Smith and how he handles this "gift" he has and seeing he others reactions to him. I'm just not so much for mystical interventions saving the heroes on a regular basis.

The disease itself, how it spreads and affects people etc., didn't get any more plausible with this episode, more the opposite actually, but then I don't think it really is supposed to be a realistic disease in the first place, it just has to work as a catalyst for the post-apocalyptic tale, so I didn't mind that.

So, overall I was happy with Letters From the Other Side.
