The animated Justice League continues to surprise me. A canon crossover with Lovecraft's universe for example ranked fairly low on the list of things I expected. Okay, despite its name it was not exactly like Lovecraft's Cthulhu in every detail, but it looked quite a bit like what I remember from Lovecraft, though I admit that it's been ages since I read any, and I was never all that fond of his writing, especially not his style, but that's not really my point.
Anyway, the latest JL episode showed me yet another reason why I wouldn't want to live in any version of the DCU. Not only are there regular alien invasions and supervillains (or crazed superheroes from time to time) who level whole city blocks (or whole cities for that matter) with disturbing regularity, you apparently also have to deal with Cthulhu on top of that. It's a wonder that the pyramids and Moai statues survived as long as they seem to have (assuming it weren't replicas), before some superheroes pointlessly destroyed ancient artifacts and monuments, because they couldn't be bothered to talk for a few minutes before starting to smash. Well, pity for the cultural heritage.
I have no real idea about the comic Thanagarians, but I thought it was interesting background that in the cartoon they worshipped Cthulhu once. I thought how Hawkgirl and Grundy bonded while fighting was sweet. They both do quite well with the "Hulk smash!" approach. Still I liked that we got to see more of Hawkgirl for once.
BTW, I thought some of the monsters were quite creepy and nightmarish. Like the ones that had the screaming mouths on their hands instead of regular heads. Not to mention all that gore when they continued their smashing inside the floating Cthulhu squid. And here I watched boring stuff like "Maya the Bee," "The Smurfs" and "Dr Snuggles" when I was seven...
